PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface defect inspection device configured to accurately inspect a surface defect on a cylindrical hollow body or a cylinder as an inspection object while preventing reduction in conveyance efficiency of the inspection object, with a simple configuration, and to provide a surface defect inspection method.SOLUTION: A surface defect inspection device includes: a slope 10 having a slope surface for conveying a steel pipe 2 rolling in a direction perpendicular to a shaft of the steel pipe 2; an imaging unit 13 which images an imaging area E on the slope 10 having a rolling-direction length of the steel pipe 2 having a peripheral length of the steel pipe 2 at least, and an axial length of the steel pipe 2; linear light sources 11, 12 irradiating the steel pipe 2 rolling in the imaging area E with light; a proximity sensor S1 for detecting whether the steel pipe 2 has entered the imaging area E; an imaging control unit 14 which controls the imaging unit 13 to continuously image the inside of the imaging area E from the time when the steel pipe 2 enters the imaging area E to the time when the steel pipe 2 exits it; and an image processing unit 15 which detects a surface defect of the steel pipe 2 on the basis of a continuous image captured under control of the imaging control unit 14. |
