A stack of rectifier elements 14 is held in compression in a tube 15 of insulating material by resilient means including a coil spring 17 between the stack and one end cap 19 of the tube, the coil spring 17 having at least one turn 22 which is larger than the others so as to grip the inside of the tube 15 and is located at the end of the spring nearer to the rectifier elements. In manufacture, Figs. 3 to 5 (not shown), the end cap 19 is fitted on the tube 15, the coil spring 17 is inserted into the open end of the tube, the individual rectifier elements 14 are punched in turn from a plate of rectifier sheet stock (Fig. 1, not shown) directly into the open end of the tube, thereby displacing the spring 17 towards the end cap 19, a second spring 16 is inserted, and the unit is sealed by the fitting of the second end cap 18. |
