A liquid crystal aligning agent which is characterized by containing an organic solvent and at least one polymer that is selected from the group consisting of polyamic acids and imidized polymers of the polyamic acids, said polyamic acids being obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid containing a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride represented by formula (A) and a diamine containing a diamine represented by formula (B). (In formula (B), Y1 represents a divalent organic group having at least one structure selected from the group consisting of an amino group, an imino group and a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring; and each of B1 and B2 independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms or an alkynyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms, said groups optionally having a substituent.)</p>
