In the present invention, disclosed is a novel protein composition, which has activity to promote cell proliferation via an EGF receptor and which can be used in place of a conventional EGF protein preparation. This protein composition is obtained by introducing to the inside of plant cells the nucleic acid that encodes the amino acid sequence of epidermal cell growth factor to induce protein expression, and then extracting and purifying the protein inside the plant cells. The composition has activity to promote cell proliferation, and displays three peaks within a range of m/z 5000 to 5500 by mass analysis.
