A composite sealing and self-locking washer comprises a generally annular resilient metallic core 6 having a substantially plane radially inner portion around a circular central orifice, the core being formed with teeth or biting edges on its opposite sides and a matrix of deformable sealing material, e.g. rubber or plastics, in which the core is embedded so that the central orifice is substantially radially aligned with a corresponding central orifice in the matrix, and the teeth or biting edges are fully embedded in the matrix, the matrix forming on one side of the radially inner portion of the core an annular bead 7, the thickness of which decreases radially outwards from a major thickness on the radially inner portion of the core. In use the washer is mounted on a rod 2 and compressed between a nut 8 and plate 1 and sealing material in the bead 7 is forced radially inwards to form a seal with the surface of the rod while being prevented from flowing outwards. In Fig. 1 the major thickness of the sealing material is of the order of two to three times that of the core, and the cross-section of the bead 7 is in the form of a right angled triangle with an angle of taper of 20 to 60 degrees at the vicinity of the radially inner edge of the washer. The washer may have a coating of constant thickness on one side. It can have an hexagonal outer periphery, indentations, or lugs, so that when compressed against a threaded rod it can be removed.</p> |
