A speed sensing system for a rotational component having a plurality of teeth arranged in a circumferentially uniform pattern about the rotational component comprising: a rotational component having: a plurality of teeth arranged in a circumferentially uniform pattern about the rotational component; andan indexing feature; a first speed sensor located adjacent to an outer circumference of the rotational component and configured to detect the presence of the indexing feature at a first circumferential location; a second speed sensor located adjacent to the outer circumference of the rotational component and configured to detect the presence of the indexing feature at a second circumferential location; and an engine control system electrically connected to receive data regarding the presence of the indexing feature from the first speed sensor and the second speed sensor, wherein the engine control system determines the locations of the first and second speed sensors based on the received data and prior knowledge of possible sensor locations relative to one another.
