A thermoplastic synthetic resin film or sheet 2 is placed between two (or more) stacks 1, 1<SP>1</SP> of thermosetting resin impregnated fibrous sheets, e.g. paper or cellulose, and the composite assembly consolidated under heat and pressure between press plates 3, so that on removal from the press the composite stack can be separated into two (or more) laminates by separating each stack from the thermoplastic sheet. The thermoplastic resin which is preferably a hydrocarbon polymer may be polypropylene, an ethylene-propylene copolymer, polyvinyl fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene or a suitable silicon resin, and may be provided as a coating layer on both sides of a sheet of paper, or on one side of each of two sheets of paper the two sheets being assembled with their coated faces non-adjacent the thickness of the resin when used alone lies within the range 0À005 to 0À02 inches and when as a film on paper 0À0005 to 0À004 inches the thermosetting resin may be phenol-formaldehyde, cresol formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde or an epoxy resin, a phenolic resin preferably being used adjacent or close to the thermoplastic sheet. In an example anα-cellulose overlay sheet, a cellulosic print sheet bearing a wood print design, both impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde and seven sheets of phenolic resin impregnated core stock were assembled to form a stack. A second identical stack was assembled and the two stacks superimposed with the overlay sheets outermost there being placed between the stacks a polyproplyne separator sheet 0À01 inch thick. The composite stack was placed between press plates and consolidated under heat and pressure. On cooling and removal from the press the two laminates were separated by hand from the separator sheet. |
