The invention comprises (i) compounds of the formula <FORM:1047026/C4-C5/1> wherein Y1 is -N = N-A or hydrogen, Y2 is hydrogen when Y1 is -N = N-A and -N = N-A when Y1 is hydrogen, R1 and R2 each represent hydrogen or alkyl groups which may be substituted or unsubstituted, and A represents the residue of a phenolic coupling component or an aromatic amine coupling component; and (ii) a compound of the formula <FORM:1047026/C4-C5/2> wherein A represents the residue of o-phenylphenol. The dyes of Formula I may be obtained by diazotizing an aminonitrodiphenylamine of the formula <FORM:1047026/C4-C5/3> wherein Z1 is H or NH2 and Z2 is H when Z1 is NH2 and NH2 when Z1 is H, and coupling the diazo compounds so formed with a phenolic coupling component or aromatic amine coupling component. The dye of Formula I may be obtained by diazotizing 2,4-dinitro-41-aminodiphenylamine and coupling the diazo compound so formed with o-phenyl-phenol. Specified aromatic hydroxy compounds are phenol, naphthols, cresols and phenylphenols. These coupling components give golden-yellow disperse dyes. Specified aromatic amine coupling components are those having the formula <FORM:1047026/C4-C5/4> wherein R represents H or a C1-C4 alkyl group R3 represents hydrogen, a C1-C4 alkyl group, a C1-C4 hydroxyalkyl, a cyanoalkyl group, or a <FORM:1047026/C4-C5/5> group wherein n is an integer from 1 to 4 and R5 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, and R4 represents hydrogen, a C1-C4 hydroxyalkyl radical, or a <FORM:1047026/C4-C5/6> radical. Examples are given for the preparation of dyes from 3 or 4-amino-21,41-dinitrodiphenylamine and orthophenylphenol, 4-amino - 21 - nitrodiphenylamine - 41 - sulphon -n - butylamide and para-cresol, and 4-amino-21,41-dinitrodiphenylamine and N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethyl-m-toluidine. The dyes of the invention may be used in dyeing or printing synthetic themoplastic fibres of the polyester type or cellulose triacetate (see Division D1) to give orange-brown, golden-yellow, yellow-brown or scarlet colours.ALSO:Synthetic thermoplastic fibres of the polyester type or cellulose triacetate are dyed or printed with a compound of the formula:- <FORM:1047026/D1-D2/1> wherein Y1 is - N = N - A or hydrogen, Y2 is hydrogen when Y1 is - N = N - A and - N = N - A when Y1 is hydrogen, X is NO2 or -SO2NR, R2 wherein R1 and R2 each represent hydrogen or alkyl groups which may be substituted, and A is the residue of a phenolic coupling component or an aromatic amine coupling component (see Division C4 for preparation) specified polyester type thermoplastic fibres is polyethylene terephthalate. Examples are given.
