1,047,960. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE. Aug. 23, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962], No.33392/63. Heading H2A. The side walls of the duct of an electromagnetic induction pump consist of contact pieces 6, of the same composition as that of the molten metal being pumped, rigidly attached to copper conductor bars 7 which are cooled so that the contact pieces remain partially solid. The contact pieces are preferably disposed outside the magnetic field and are brazed to the hollow conductor bars 7 which are cooled by circulating water through ducts 8. The other walls 1a, 1b, of the duct are of zirconia and are located between laminated electromagnet cores 2a, 2b which carry windings 3. The hollow winding bars are interconnected to form a three-phase winding with overlapping turns, Fig. 3 (not shown), and are water-cooled. The duct is held in place by spring-loaded rams 10 and the refractory wall 1 and conductor bars 7 are shaped to be forced together. The duct is about 1 cm. thick and 20 cm. wide and a pumping rate of 50 tons/hour for liquid steel is quoted. |
