1,049,073. Chemical contact apparatus; contacting gases with liquids. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Feb. 17, 1964 [Feb. 25, 1963], No. 6426/64. Headings B1F and B1R. An apparatus for distributing a liquid in a vertically flowing fluid i.e. liquid or gas, comprises a column containing a plurality of horizontal, vertically spaced beds 13 of packing material, horizontal perforated pipes 18 in the inter-bed spaces, the pipes having rows of uniformly spaced holes 19, 19<SP>1</SP> adapted to jet a liquid horizontally, and horizontal baffles 20, 20<SP>1</SP> in the plane of the pipes 18 defining passages 21, 21<SP>1</SP> for a vertically flowing fluid. The baffles may be flat or have sloping faces, as shown. The pipes may be square in section, see Fig. 6 (not shown) and may be straight and centrally disposed in the column, as shown, or may be circular and disposed near the periphery of the column, see Fig. 5 (not shown), the baffle being then a single circular plate in the centre of the column. The fluid may flow upwardly or downwardly, and the holes may be positioned respectively in the upper or lower portions of the pipes 18. The packing 13 may comprise an inert material, e.g. quartz chips, a catalyst in pellet or spherical form, or an absorbent, e.g. silica gel, activated charcoal, alumnium silicates, e.g. clays, activated alumina, and molecular sieves, e.g. dehydrated calcium aluminosilicate hydrate. It is stated that the apparatus may operate with the pipes 18 as outlets for treated fluid instead as liquid inlets, or movable inlets and outlets may be employed, e.g. as described in Specification 879.687.
