[Also in Division C3] A flocculating agent comprises an aqueous colloidal solution of an acrylamide-sodium acrylate copolymer, which is prepared by polymerizing an aqueous solution containing at least 10% by weight of a mixture of acrylamide and sodium acrylate (obtained by hydrolysing acrylonitrile and neutralizing the product) to form a gel product, and subjecting the gel product to vigorous mechanical action consisting of impact shearing. The flocculating agent can be used for thickening fine dispersions of metal-, coal- or industrial mineral pulps to increase clarification velocity and augment clarifying- filtering capacity; it may also be used to coagulate materials suspended in surface waters. In experiments to compare the agent with known polymeric compounds, tests are carried out on an illite-kaolin dispersion. |
