When preparing electrodes for water alkali electrolysis, the binding agent formed by poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylenoxide) with benzyltrimethylammonium groups in the side chain, containing 5 to 35 percent by mole polymeric structural units with benzyltrimethylammonium group, is dissolved in an organic solvent to give a 1 to 20 percent solution and the so formed solution is then mixed with catalyst particles to thereby forming a catalytic ink. Subsequently, the catalytic ink is applied to electrodes, and the solvent evaporates. When preparing an anode, the binding agent solution is mixed with catalyst particles such that after application to the anode and evaporation of the solvent, the catalyst/binding agent weight ratio would be 97 : 3 to 50 : 50. When preparing a cathode, the binding agent solution is mixed with catalyst particles such that after application to the cathode and evaporation of the solvent, the catalyst/binding agent weight ratio would be 97 : 3 to 60 : 40. The thus performed catalytic layer on the electrodes is conductive for hydroxyl ions and this does not prevents transfer of electrons and transportation of water, oxygen and hydrogen during the water alkali electrolysis. |
