A method and apparatus for verifying the integrity of image data in a mixed reality (augmented reality) display system comprising a screen 200 and a processor 106 for receiving image data captured from a user's real world environment and configured to blend the image data into a three dimensional virtual environment to create a mixed reality environment for display on the screen 102. A beacon (locator) 108 is provided within the user's real world environment, such that image data representative thereof is captured by the image capture device(s) (14 figure 1) of the mixed reality display system, wherein the beacon 108 is configured to emit a known predetermined signal. The signal is then identified from the captured image data of the beacon 108, and the identified signal is compared with the known predetermined signal, such that the integrity of the image data can be verified if the identified signal matches the known predetermined signal. The predetermined signal may be a time dependent visible or auditory signal. The beacon may be a lamp emitting periodic or pre determined patterned light pulse, and may comprise an alphanumeric sequence created by the user or may be randomly generated. The visual pattern may be extracted from the image data and decoded, and the decoded signal displayed on the screen. The integrity of the image data is verified by the user comparing the known predetermined signal (or alphanumeric data) (figure 5) with that displayed on the screen. |
