<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener for an alkaline battery which is excellent in an injection property to a housing can and a retention property for an alkaline electrolyte solution, and to provide an alkaline battery using the thickener which is excellent in a long-term discharge characteristic and a vibration and shock resistance. <P>SOLUTION: A thickener for an alkaline battery comprises a polymer (A) containing as essential constitutional units the following ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a1) and/or the following ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a2) and the following ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a3), and satisfies requirements (1) and (2). The ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a1): an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one kind of anionic group selected from the group consisting of a carboxyl group, a sulfo group, and a phosphate group. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer (a2): a salt of (a1) and an alkali metal and/or onium cation.
