The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein n is 0 or 1; R1 is C2H4 or C3H6 and R2 is CH3 or C2H5. They are prepared by brominating 1,4,5,8-tetrahydroxy anthraquinone to yield a dibromo derivative and reacting this with a substituted glycol to introduce the ether side chain. Specified compounds claimed per se include 2 - ethoxyethoxy - 6 - bromo - 1,4,5,8-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone; 2 - methoxy - ethoxy - ethoxy - 6 - bromo - 1,4,5,8 - tetra hydroxyanthraquinone; 2 ethoxyethoxy-ethoxy 6 - bromo - 1,4,5,8 - tetrahydroxyanthraquinone, and 2 - ethoxypropoxy - 6 - bromo-1,4,5,8 - tetrahydroxyanthraquinone. The compounds may be used as disperse dyes for synthetic fibres, e.g. nylon, dacron, acrilan and particularly metal-modified polyolefin fibres.ALSO:Polyolefins modified by metal compounds containing nickel or aluminium, e.g. aluminium stearate, are coloured using compounds of the general formula wherein n is 0 or 1, R1 is C2H4 or C3H6 and R2 is CH3 or C2H5. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polyethylene. polypropylene, polybutene, poly-3-methylbutene-1, polypentene, poly-4-methylpentene-1 and polyheptene.
