An optical system is described comprising:
(a) a blocking switch (60) comprising having first and second input ports and M output ports;
a first IxM switch (50') having an input coupled to a first output port (1') of the first switch; and
a second IxM switch (52'') having an input coupled to the second output port (2') of the first switch to provide a 2xM switch;
(b) a primary laser connected to the first input port, said primary laser capable of being routed to any of the M ports of the IxM switch; and
(c) a backup laser connected to port 2, said backup laser capable of being routed to any of the same M ports of the IxM switch.
