1,060,560. Jointing by stamping. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 20, 1966 [Feb. 1, 1965], No. 2623/66. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division F2] A method of clamping a resilient sleeve 36, such as that forming a rolling seal for a combined hydraulic shock absorber and air spring unit 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), to a tubular member, such as the barrel 14 of the shock absorber, comprises positioning the end portion of the sleeve coaxially around the tubular member, positioning a clamping ring 56 around said end portion, and applying a uniform magnetic field around said ring sufficient to radially deform the ring and the underlying portion of the tubular member inwards so that the sleeve is interlockingly clamped therebetween. The magnetic field, having a strength of about 6 kilojoules, is produced by coaxially positioned coil 66. The sleeve, when forming part of a combined shock absorber and air spring unit, may be drawn back on itself and clamped to the outside of a tubular dust shield 28 of the unit by a further electro-magnetically deformed clamping ring, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). |
