There is provided a small cell base station for use in a communications network having a small cell gateway. The small cell base station comprises: an uplink detector operable to monitor an RF uplink signal; a downlink detector operable to monitor an RF downlink signal; and a microcontroller in communication with the uplink detector and the downlink detector, operable to determine if the RF uplink signal satisfies a threshold condition based on the output of the uplink detector, wherein upon determining that the threshold condition is satisfied, the microcontroller is operable to transition the small cell base station to an active mode; determine if the RF downlink signal has been absent for a predetermined period of time, wherein upon determining that the RF downlink signal has been absent for a predetermined period of time, the microcontroller is operable to transition the small cell base station to a sleep mode; and optimise the threshold condition based on the occurrence, duration and/or success of transitioning the small cell base station to the active mode. |
