A power-assisted gear change mechanism comprises a slidable and rotatable shaft 1 for gear selection and establishment, the rotation being assisted by a pneumatic actuator 22 of which the double-acting piston 21 is connected by a rod 19 to a crank arm 17 splined on the shaft 1 and formed with cam lobes engaged between spring-loaded plungers 15, 16. The ball joint 5 of the gear change lever 4 is mounted between plungers 44, 46, transverse movement of the lever causing one or other of the plungers to rotate an associated pivot 40 or 41 and lever (36 or 37), Fig. 4 (not shown), to operate the plungers 32, 33 of a servo-control valve 30 including a central loading spring 54 and regulating the supply of compressed air from an inlet port 31a to the actuator cylinder ports 28a, 29a. The spring 54 ensures that servo assistance occurs when the manual effort applied to the gear lever 4 exceeds a predetermined value. The shaft 1 is loaded axially by a pair of concentric springs (10, 11), Fig. 1 (not shown). |
