1. A method of producing a fatty alcohol composition comprising C12 and C14 fatty alcohols in a bacterial cell, the method comprising:
(a) expressing in the bacterial cell a gene encoding a polypeptide having thioesterase (EC 3.1.2- or EC 3.1.1.5) activity effective to release a fatty acid from acyl-ACP; and (b) further expressing in said bacterial cell an exogenous gene encoding a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:22; and (c) culturing said bacterial cell in culture media containing a carbohydrate carbon source under conditions wherein at least 25 mg of the composition is produced per liter of bacterial culture.
