Provided are: an operation input apparatus having improved gesture detection accuracy by suppressing influence of disturbance; an operation input method; and a program. This operation input apparatus is provided with: an infrared irradiation means that radiates infrared; an image pickup means that picks up an image by detecting the infrared; a luminance calculating means, which calculates a luminance difference in the picked up image, i.e., the image picked by means of the image pickup means, said luminance difference being a difference between a luminance of a first area irradiated with the infrared by means of the infrared irradiation means, and a luminance of a second area that is disposed outside of the first area; an infrared control means that adjusts irradiation intensity of the infrared to be radiated from the infrared irradiation means such that the luminance difference thus calculated by means of the luminance calculating means becomes a predetermined target value; an image processing means that detects a shape of an instructing object on the basis of the picked up image; a determining means that determines, on the basis of the shape thus detected by means of the image processing means, contents of the operations performed by means of the instructing object; and a command means that makes an apparatus to be operated execute functions corresponding to the operation contents determined by means of the determining means. |
