A first aspect of the present invention pertains to an optical element having an oxide glass, and a coating film coating at least a portion of the surface of the oxide glass. The coating film is a metal oxide film which is in a state of oxygen deficit with respect to the stoichiometric composition, and at a temperature at or above the glass transition temperature of the oxide glass, the speed at which the metal oxide film incorporates oxygen atoms contained in the oxide glass is faster than the speed at which metal atoms contained in the oxide glass diffuse into the oxide glass. |
