The washing machine (1) is provided with: a water tank (4) inside which a pulsator (11) and a washing/water extraction tank (10) are set so as to rotate freely; a lid opening/closing detection unit (36) for detecting the opening and closing of the lid (26); and a water tank-tilting unit (32) for tilting the water tank (4) when opening of the lid (26) is detected and for righting the water tank (4) when closing of the lid (26) is detected or during operation. In other words, the water tank (4) tilts when the user opens the lid (26) to put in or take out items that are being washed (23). Because it is thereby possible for the user to see the front (28) of the bottom of the washing/water extraction tank (10) from a specified position without having to peer inside, the items being washed (23) can be easily put in or taken out.
