Impure fuel withdrawn from a tank 12 by a pump 14 is passed through a separator 10 from which a fraction containing the separated water is returned by line 48 to another part of tank 12, tank 12 being divided by a porous barrier which passes fuel but retains water in portion 54. In Fig. 1 the barrier comprises sheets 52 of wire screen coated with polytetrafluoroethylene, supported by corrugated perforate baffles 58, which reduce turbulence, and supplemented by a baffle 60 to retain any water which penetrates sheets 52. The separator 10 (Fig. 3, not shown) comprises an inward flow assembly of pleated, resin impregnated element (34), fibre-glass batt (30) and resin-impregnated pleated element (38), which coalesces the water and directs it from sump outlet 20 to line 48, passing pure fuel to upper outlet 18. Restriction 50 is designed to pass a sufficient proportion of the flow that all water returns to tank 12, plus sufficient fuel to prevent freezing in line 48. The porous barrier 52, 58 may comprise concentric cylindrical screens, and in Fig. 4 (not shown) these are located in a chamber (164) from which only fuel is returned to main fuel tank (112). In Fig. 5 (not shown), such a chamber is connected between main and secondary fuel tanks (212, 213) of which tank (213) only accumulates the separated water. Such a circuit is used in a military tank. In Fig. 6 (not shown), two fuel tanks (312, 313) are used, tank (313) containing the barrier (352) in the form of a cylindrical screen closed at one end and mounted on a float. Barrier (352) floats on the fuel-water interface and returns fuel via flexible pipe (384) to tank (312). The barrier could comprise a cylindrical 'edge filter' comprising two interposed helically wound strips, one of resin impregnated material the other polytetrafluoroethylene.
