PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method of alerting a driver when visual perception of a pedestrian may be difficult.SOLUTION: A pedestrian perception alert system includes: a video camera 12 configured to capture a video image; an alert 14 for issuing a warning; a processor 16 which is in electrical communication with the video camera; a pedestrian detection unit 18 configured to analyze the video image to detect a pedestrian; a global clutter analysis unit 20 configured to generate a global clutter score by measuring clutters in all the video images; and a local pedestrian clutter analysis unit 22 configured to generate a local pedestrian clutter score by measuring clutters of the pedestrians detected in the video images.
