<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To confirm that an index for classification is formed on a desired print medium side, and to detect an abnormality of a mechanism for forming the index. <P>SOLUTION: The index forming mechanism is arranged at the periphery of a conveying passage of a print medium, and includes an index forming part for forming a colored area as the index of a classified part at the side of the print medium. The index forming mechanism includes a detection part for detecting the index on the side of the conveyed print medium.
