Polyphenol polymers are obtained by partially dehydrochlorinating a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon to produce an olefinically unsaturated chlorinated compound, and then reacting this compound with a phenol having at least two free positions ortho or para to a phenolic hydroxy group. The chlorinated hydrocarbon is partially dehydrochlorinated by heating with a caustic alkali in a solvent, and the unsaturated chlorinated compound is reacted with the phenol by heating at 120 DEG to 185 DEG C., optionally in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst; hydrogen chloride is evolved. In examples a chlorinated C22-C24 hydrocarbon containing 47-49% by weight of chlorine is heated with potassium hydroxide in industrial methylated spirits, and the unsaturated product so obtained is heated (i) with phenol in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, and (ii) with resorcinol alone. |
