<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system capable of monitoring the motion of an object while recognizing the object over a plurality of recognition areas. <P>SOLUTION: An object monitoring system includes: range finding means for obtaining range finding data of a target recognition area by irradiating the recognition area with radiation of a laser sensor installed for each of a plurality of divided recognition areas; and first determination means for collating the range finding data acquired by the range finding means with information stored in an object specification DB to determine an obstacle on the basis of a size of an object. By collating an object determined as an obstacle as a result of the determination by the first determination means with object data stored in a recognition data DB, in the case where the object moves over a plurality of recognition areas and identical to an object detected before, range finding data relating to the object in the recognition data DB are added and if the object has not been detected before, range finding data relating to the object are newly registered to the recognition data DB.
