ClO2 and Cl2 are produced by continuously adding an alkali metal chlorate and chloride, and H2SO4 to a generator, and maintaining an acidity of 1-2.4 M, a temperature above 30 DEG C., and a partial pressure of water such as to ensure crystallization of anhydrous alkali metal sulphate. Liquid effluent may be withdrawn and recycled either directly or via a crystalliser. The alkali metal may be Na, K, or Li. The chlorate and chloride may be added dry or as solutions, separately or together, in a ratio of 1:1 to 1:6 respectively. H2SO4 used may be above 100%. The partial pressure of water may be maintained in the generator by means of a water jet eductor (which produces a partial vacuum and also dissolves the ClO2 and Cl2) or by using a stream of inert gas, e.g. air or N2. If a crystallizer is used, the partial pressure is maintained there by the same methods, and the ClO2 and CL2 are removed from the generator by means of a vacuum or stripping gas. The product gases may be scrubbed by the incoming chlorate and chloride solutions to remove HCl.
|
