A mobile terminal and an operating method thereof are provided. The mobile terminal includes a terminal body (100); and a terminal case (200) coupled to the terminal body (100) to cover at least a front surface of the terminal body (100), the terminal body (100) comprising: a display unit (151) disposed at the front surface thereof, to display an image; a sensing unit (140) sensing whether the front surface of the display unit (151) is covered by the terminal case (200); and a controller (180) controlling an operation of the display unit (151), and the terminal case comprising: a terminal coupling part (210) to which the terminal body (100) is coupled; a front cover part (230) rotatably coupled to the terminal coupling part (210) to cover the front surface of the terminal body (100) and including a window (231) for allowing a light emitted from the display unit (151) to be transmitted; and a pattern part (240) provided at a portion of the front cover part (230) corresponding to a region other than the window (231), wherein the display unit (151) is defined by an exposed region corresponding to the window (231) and a hidden region corresponding to the region other than the window (231), wherein when a signal to turn on the display unit (151) is input in a state where the front cover part (230) covers the front surface of the display unit (151), the controller (180) is configured to display a user interface at least in the hidden region, to enable a user input through a manipulation of the pattern part (240).
