[Also in Division G1] The force expended by a body on a mattress due to e.g. respiration, heartbeats &c. is measured by a number of vibrating string transducers symmetrically supporting the mattress from a fixed frame. The weight is measured by similar transducers mounted on each leg of the frame. Each transducer comprises a stretched string 28 (Fig. 8) located between the poles of a permanent magnet 15 and subjected to the tension between the mattress 1 and the fixed frame 3, or tensioned by the weight of the body and support assembly (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The average value of each frequency represents the weight component, and the variations around this average value reoresent the forces due to respiration, heartbeats &c., which may be separated out by suitable filters. |
