1,093,329. Selective punching apparatus. NAVIGATION COMPUTER CORPORATION. June 17, 1966 [June 18, 1965], No. 27210/66. Heading B4B. In punching apparatus comprising a reciprocatable cage 13 to which a comb 14 is secured, a set of punch pins 17, and interposers 16 of ferromagnetic material selectively movable between the comb teeth and the pins 17 to drive the pins to punch a paper tape 19, each interposer is a spring finger secured at one end to a pole 29, Fig. 3, of a magnet 22 allowing movement of the other end in one plane, X, in response to movement of the cage 13, which is connected to the armature 12 of a solenoid coil 11, and in another plane, Y, towards the pole 31, Fig. 3, of the magnet in response to energization of the magnet by a signal. The finger 16, together with a finger 23 for retracting the pin 17 after a punching stroke is secured to a carriage 28 adjustably secured, by a screw 30, to the magnet pole 29. The comb 14 has secured thereto a lever arm 55 which advances a sprocket 54 stepwise, the tape 19 being held in the punching position by means of a detent lever 61 engaging a detent wheel (60), Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification, the comb (14), Fig. 6 (not shown), has a punch pin retracting bar (35) mounted on a bracket (36), the bar engaging wide slots (24<1>) in the punch pins (17, 171). In another modification, a ferromagnetic helper bar (40), Figs. 7 and 8 (both not shown), is provided to decrease the gap between the poles (29, 31) of the magnet (22) and a felt pad (42) is provided on a stop-plate (41) to damp any tendency of the spring finger (16) to vibrate when it is released from its associated pole (31).
