Modified polyolefins are prepared by reacting chlorinated polyolefins with a trialkyl phosphite to produce phosphonate ester groups in place of all or some of the chlorine atoms in the polyolefin. The product may be further reacted with water or an amine, e.g. hydrazine. In an example isotactic polypropylene is chlorinated in tetrachloroethane in the presence of ultraviolet light, the chlorinated polypropylene is refluxed with tributyl phosphite, and the product is melt spun into filaments and dyed, optionally after treating with boiling hydrazine.ALSO:Articles such as fibres made of modified polyolefins prepared by chlorinating polyolefins, reacting with trialkyl phosphites to introduce phosphonate ester groups and subsequently with water or an amine, are dyed with basic or acid dyes. In an example chlorinated isotactic polypropylene is refluxed with tributyl phosphite and spun into fibres which dye with basic dyes or treated with boiling hydrazine and dyed with acid dyes. |
