Yarn is formed from at least two staple fibre and/or continuous filament components, one having latent (and perhaps some patent) crimp and the other being heat shrinkable, and a hank of such yarn or a fabric made therefrom is heated e.g. by exposure to super-heated steam, to bulk the yarn and render it extensible as a result of the release, or further or complete developments, of random or regular e.g. helical, crimp and shrinkage in the respective components. The latent crimp exists as a result of previously crimping the fibre and then temporarily removing the crimp, or by virtue of the bicomponent structure of the fibre. The crimped or crimpable and shrinkable fibres may be of one or more forms of polyacrylonitrile or the former may be of cellulose triacetate or the latter of a polyolefin, polyvinyl chloride, or polyester. These fibres, which may differ in denier and/or staple length are combined in a loose fibre or sliver blend and then spun and twisted into doubled yarns. |
