PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element exhibiting excellent optical characteristics, an image display device, and an imaging device.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal optical element includes: a first substrate section 10 that includes a plurality of first electrodes 14 extending in a first direction and arranged in a second direction, a plurality of second electrodes 16 each provided between the adjacent first electrodes, and a first orientation film 18; a second substrate section 20 that includes a counter electrode 24 and a second orientation film 26; and a liquid crystal layer 30 held between the first substrate section 10 and the second substrate section 20. First orientation film-side liquid crystal molecules 32 are oriented perpendicularly and second orientation film-side liquid crystal molecules are oriented horizontally. The counter electrode 24 includes: a first area present between a first flat surface 42 passing through a center line of a width of the second electrode 16 in the second direction and perpendicular to the second direction, and a second flat surface passing through a center line 41a of one of the first electrodes 14 adjacent to the second electrode 16 and perpendicular to the second direction; and a second area present between the first flat surface 42 and a third flat surface passing through a center line 41b of the other first electrode 14 adjacent to the second electrode 16 and perpendicular to the second direction. The second area includes more apertures 24a than those of the first area. |
