Provided is a negative electrode material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery which has high capacity maintenance rate in repeated charge and discharge. The negative electrode material for a non-aqueous secondary battery of an embodiment includes silicon nanoparticles, and a coating layer coating the silicon nanoparticles, wherein the coating layer has amorphous silicon oxide and silicon carbide, and at least one part of the silicon carbide exists on the surface of silicon nanoparticles.
