The present invention relates to a method for producing a highly absorbent resin, wherein the method comprises the steps of: a) preparing a water-containing gel-phase polymer by thermally polymerizing or optically polymerizing a monomer composition including a water-soluble ethylene-based unsaturated monomer and a polymerization initiator; b) drying the water-containing gel-phase polymer; c) pulverizing the dried water-containing gel-phase polymer; d) adding a surface cross-linking agent and particles having the properties of i) and ii) in the pulverized water-containing gel-phase polymer, wherein i) is a BET specific surface area of 300 to 1500 m^2/g, and ii) is a porosity of 50% or more; and d) performing a surface cross-linking reaction.
