[Also in Division F2] A method of laminating plies of fabric comprises interposing between the plies an opennetwork thermoplastic sheet to produce a sandwich-like structure and, while maintaining the plies of the sandwich-like structure in contact, heating it to a temperature sufficient to melt the thermoplastic sheet by passing a hot gas, e.g. air or steam, therethrough. Exemplified fabrics are woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics of cotton, wool, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyamides, polyacrylics and polyvinyls. The open network may be formed by moulding, by laying strands or threads at right angles, by weaving or by random laying of strands or threads, specified thermoplastic materials being polyethylene, polypropylene, polyesters, polyamides, ethylene-propylene copolymers, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers and ethylene-methyl methacrylate copolymers, many suitable configurations of the structure of the open network being shown. Tubular laminates may be made by placing the sandwichlike structure between two metal screens, rolling the resultant assembly into a tube, closing one end of the tube and forcing the hot gas through the assembly. In Fig. 14, fabric plies 25 and 27 and open-network sheet 26 are fed over the surface of perforated or screen drum 20, hot gas being forced through the assembly by fan 31 and pressure maintained by endless belt 21.
