Apparatus and method for detecting disease in dairy animals

Disclosed is an apparatus operable to detect udder disease in dairy animals. The apparatus is comprised of an accelerometer for attachment to a dairy animal and a processor operable to determine a measure of activity of a dairy animal to which the accelerometer is attached. The measure of activity is an index value associated with kinetic energy expended by the animal. Methods and computer programs for determing the index value are also disclosed.
