A solid state switching device comprises a body of phase change material in the form of a filament between 10<SP>-3</SP> and 10<SP>-2</SP> inches in diameter which may be enclosed in insulating tube 9. Conductive electrodes 1<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP> contact the filament. The material may consist of an arsenic-tellurium-iodine composition which may exist in either a high-resistance or a lowresistance state, switching between the two states being achieved by applying a voltage or a current respectively which exceeds a certain threshold value. Using a thin filament for the body achieves more stable operation. In an alternative embodiment the filament is disposed in a hole penetrating an insulating disc with metallic layers as the electrodes. |
