PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide modified isoprenoid synthases.SOLUTION: Provided is a chimeric isoprenoid synthase polypeptide comprising a first domain derived from a first isoprenoid synthase, the first domain being joined to a second domain derived from a second heterologous isoprenoid synthase, where the chimeric isoprenoid synthase can catalyze the production of an isoprenoid reaction product that is not produced in the absence of the second domain derived from the second heterologous isoprenoid synthase. The invention also provides a chimeric isoprenoid synthase comprising homologous domains located in asymmetrical positions, where the synthase can catalyze the production of an isoprenoid reaction product which is not produced when the domain is located at the naturally occurring position in the isoprenoid synthase polypeptide.
