A photobioreactor (1) and a photobioreactor system (100) are proposed, in order to cultivate phototrophic organisms, for example to produce fuels. The photobioreactor (1) has a vessel (3) and at least one laterally light-emitting light conductor mat (5). The vessel (3) is charged with the phototrophic organisms together with a nutrient solution (2). One or preferably more than one light conductor mat(s) (5) is/are arranged within the vessel (3) and each has a multiplicity of light-conducting fibres (9), which are arranged and/or formed in such a way that light that is introduced into the fibre at one end thereof is at least partially emitted laterally from the fibre. Consequently, a large adjacent volume within the vessel (3) can be illuminated over an extent of its surface area by way of the light conductor mat (5), in order in this way to increase efficiency of the photobioreactor (1). The light conductor mats (5) may also be moved by a mat moving device (7), in order to mix the nutrient solution specifically throughout the organisms. A photodetector coupled externally to the fibres can allow on-site monitoring of vital functions of the organisms. |
