Quaternary organosilicon ammonium salts of the formula where R is a C 1-6 alkyl or a phenyl radical, or siloxane condensation products thereof, are prepared by reacting a bromomethyl-Si compound of the formula or siloxane condensation product thereof with trimethylamine, at a temperature not higher than 50‹ C., in the presence of an inert polar solvent having a dielectric constant above 25 at 20‹ C. Specified solvents are acetonitrile, benzonitrile, dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulphoxide. The siloxanes may be co-condensates with conventional siloxane units. The examples describe the preparation of silanes, disiloxanes, cyclotetrasiloxanes and a trimethylsiloxy end-blocked linear siloxane containing in all 22 silicon atoms, 4 of which are substituted by -CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 3 Br. |
