PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a methacrylic acid from a biobased starting material.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing a methacrylic acid which comprises: a) a step of oxidizing a compound represented by the formula I to obtain isobutyric acid; b) a step of halogenating the isobutyric acid to obtain 3-haloisobutyric acid; and c) a step of dehalogenating the 3-haloisobutyric acid to obtain a methacrylic acid, wherein the compound represented by the formula I is isobutanol or isobutanal, the oxidizing agent is potassium permanganate, the halogen performs halogenation with chlorine in the presence of acetic anhydride and the inorganic base is sodium hydroxide.
