Tetracycline is produced by a method comprising aerobically, and under conditions of submerged growth, culturing the strain Streptomyces N.C.I.B. 9692 in a chloride-ion-containing aqueous culture medium to accumulate and recover a substantial amount of tetracycline. The strain Streptomyces N.C.I.B. 9692 was obtained by mutagenic treatment of an antagonistic actinomyces strain with U.V. light and subsequent cultivation of the irradiated spores on a sporulation medium containing chlorotetracycline. The aqueous culture medium preferably contains 3 to 300 micromoles of chloride ions per millilitre of medium. Since the aqueous culture medium contains chloride ions, the nitrogen source may be provided by amino acids in the form of protein hydrolysates made from feathers, bones, or vegetable protein by hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid and subsequent neutralization and waste products from soup condiments or glutamic acid formed by acid hydrolysis of suitable proteins (humine substances).
