The invention relates to the use of L-tryptophan comprising one or more stable, isotope labels for in vivo monitoring of the tryptophan-serotonin metabolism, especially for the characterization of compounds modulating the tryptophan-serotonin metabolism, for detecting diseases associated with an alteredtryptophan-serotonin metabolism; and for monitoring therapeutic treatment of diseases associated with an altered tryptophan-serotonin metabolism.
