Apparatus for the calcination of finely divided minerals comprises a preheat system 10, a reactor 12 and cyclones 54 and 60. Solids to be treated e.g. limestone or phosphate rock, pass to chamber 14 by conduit 34, and thence by conduits 38 and 40 successively into chambers 16 and 18, before passing into calcination system 12 by conduits 42 and 45 and valve 44. Fluidizing and preheating gas from calcination system 12 passes by cyclone 54 and windbox 20 before passing up through chambers 18, 16, and 14 and perforated plates 19, 17 and 15. Exhaust gas passes by conduit 59 to cyclone 60, whence fines are delivered back to calcination system 12. Calcination system 12 comprises constriction plates 25 and 24 separating windbox 26, cooling chamber 24 and calcination chamber 22. Fuel is introduced by inlet 72 into calcination chamber 22 to maintain its temperature at about 1800‹F. Solids pass to the cooling chamber 24 by conduit 45, and thence to screw conveyor 50 which also receives fines from cyclone 54. The perforated restriction plates are said to have "straight-through" orifices to avoid scaling. In Fig. 2 (not shown), such orifices 68 as shown to have a cylindrical cross-section with an inverted frusto-conical mouth-piece 70 restricting the open upper ends.
