1,111,374. Gyroscopic apparatus. GENERAL PRECISION SYSTEMS, Inc. Oct. 10, 1966 [March 17, 1966], No. 45240/ 66. Heading G1C. A free rotor gyro comprises a casing 12 with a support shaft 14 having a longitudinal axis 26, a rotor 16 mounted on a spherical ball bearing for rotation relative to the shaft 14 about a spin axis 28 normally coincident with the axis 26 at a null condition of the gyro, the rotor being electrically driven by a drive 24 having a coil assembly with two separate stacks 92, 94 of core laminations spaced in the direction of the axis 26, this arrangement serving to counteract error torques about axes in quadrature with the axis 26. Each stack of laminations is provided with separate coils 96, 98 and these are connected in parallel to the electrical supply. The arrangement is such that when the rotor is in the null position both core laminations overlap the gyro rotor periphery by the same amount. The supply to the drive 24 is preferably a three phase, variable frequency, variable-voltage supply and the drive 24 provides a corrective torque counteracting any error torques due to windage, rotor suspension and the like, and this will be effective even when the rotor is displaced from its null position. The corrective torque can be varied by adjusting either the voltage or the frequency of the supply. An optical pick-off 20 with a lightsource 80, reflector 76 and receiver 78 is provided as also are torquer coils 86, 88 and others (not shown) disposed on an axis at 90 degrees to the plane of Fig. 1. The rotor 16 is provided with a balancing nut 60 to ensure that its centre of gravity coincides with the centre of the spherical bearing. |
