A heat pump comprises first and second heat exchangers and a refrigerant pump mounted on a common axis for rotation as a single unit, the heat exchangers being formed aerodynamically to act as impellers promoting a flow of fluid over their heat exchange surfaces. As shown in Fig. 5, the heat exchangers 56, 57 are mounted end-to-end and comprise hollow blades 131 of aerofoil crosssection having annular fins 66. Refrigerant from a compressor 60 passes through the blades of exchanger 56 in which it is condensed, and is then supplied through one or more capillary tubes 69 to alternate blades of exchanger 57, the evaporator. The refrigerant returns through the remaining blades of the exchanger to a header 62 and thence through an axial duct 61 to the compressor. The latter, together with its motor 58, 59 is mounted in a casing 55 which, together with exchangers 56, 57 is rotated by a further motor 53, 53A. The complete unit is mounted in a fixed frame 50. The frame may be positioned in an aperture in the external wall of a room (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) and the heat exchangers each provided with a rotatable shroud so that they act as cross-ftow impellers. Each shroud may be placed in four main positions in which: only room air circulates over the associated heat exchanger; only external air circulates thereover; external air is supplied to the room over the heat exchanger, and room air is extracted over the heat exchanger. In the embodiment of Fig. 8, a casing 210 located in the wall 94 of a refrigerator or cold-store supports coaxial spindles 225, 226 which carry the rotary heat exchanger 90, 91 having internally partitioned aerofoil blades. Spindle 226 carries a rotor 220 which is driven by a stator 221 and rotates a casing 224 together with the exchangers. Casing 224 is surrounded by a stator 223 and encloses a rotor 222 in the interior of which is provided a refrigerant compressor of the rotary pistonsliding vane type (Fig. 9, not shown). Two forms of heat exchanger for use in the heat pump are described with reference to Figs. 1 and 3 (not shown). In the former, the aerofoil blades are interconnected by annular elements having corrugated walls, while in the latter the heat-exchanger is formed from a single helically wound strip provided with hollow stubs of aerofoil section. The corresponding stubs of adjacent turns of the helix are connected to form the aerofoil blades.
