A turret lathe of the type having a turret in the form of a spider which is indexible into at least two positions for the use of at least two tools and which is movable towards and away from a workpiece is provided with adjusting means which act on an arm of the turret to adjust at least one of the positions into which the turret is indexed to allow for tool wear, the distance between the adjusting means and the turret axis being greater than that between the turret axis and workpieoe axis. In a lathe having a chuck 2 and a turret 5 an index pin 7 is mounted on a wedge member 8 which is movable transversely by the displacement of a complementary wedge member by means of a motor 9 and screw 10. The turret slides on to the pin 7 in the index positions and is adjusted for tool wear by movement of the pin. Electrical means including a switching device 12 and potentiometer 13 are used to apply predetermined corrections for the various tools. Pin 7 may also be used to lift the tools clear of the workpiece on the return stroke of the turret. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) eccentric bushes mounted in arms of the turret are relatively rotatable to adjust the turret position in relation to a fixed index pin. |
